A Treehouse That Grows Up with the Kids
The Rundown
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kenzie and Sebastian Middleton—the DIY duo behind The Shady Farmhouse on Instagram—turned leftover materials and creative thinking into a durable, design-forward treehouse finished with Trusscore Wall&CeilingBoard and Trusscore SlatWall.

The Goal: Build a Durable & Design-Forward Treehouse for the Kids
For Kenzie and Sebastian, building a treehouse wasn’t just about giving their kids a place to play, it was about creating a space that felt intentional, imaginative, and built to last.
“Our kids had wanted a play structure since we built the house, but Sebastian didn’t want to mow around an obstacle. Since we have the trees around our property, a treehouse made sense.”
The couple saw an opportunity to build something special—a project that would grow with their family over time.
“Why not give your kids something you never had while growing up?”
The goal was simple but ambitious: Build a modern, low-maintenance treehouse that could handle the elements, everyday wear and tear, and plenty of creative play.
The Challenge: Repurpose Materials Without Compromising on Design
As avid DIYers, the Middletons wanted to use as much leftover material as possible from their home build, but they didn't want to compromise on their design.
“We were conscious of building the treehouse with mostly leftover materials from our house build. At one point we were just going to put G1S plywood and paint it white with leftover paint. Another option was to line the inside with shiplap lumber, but we weren’t set on one product or the other.”
They also wanted a finish that would be easy to clean, hold up against outdoor conditions, and still look stylish—not sterile or industrial.

The Solution: Trusscore Creates a Lightweight, Resilient, and Easy-to-Clean Finish
Then, inspiration struck when Trusscore liked one of their photos on social media.
“We had toyed with the idea of different products, then Trusscore liked a photo of ours on social media and we thought, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be nice to have something resilient, marker friendly, easy to install, and incorporated a slatwall component so we could easily hang artwork, baskets, and more?’”
They decided to finish the walls with gray Trusscore Wall&CeilingBoard, a lightweight, water-resistant alternative to drywall that’s easy to clean and designed to last a lifetime without cracking or warping. They installed white Trusscore SlatWall as a track around the treehouse. The modular system allows them to hang shelves, hooks, and baskets—and reconfigure them anytime they want.
“Sebastian had used white Wall&CeilingBoard in many of his projects but hadn’t used the gray product yet. We didn’t want it to look like a clean room, so we thought the gray would tone down the look a bit but add character.”
Installation was simple, even for a project several feet off the ground.
“It’s a breeze, very easy to install. We installed the panels horizontally due to our stud spacing but I’ve installed it both ways previously.”
Because Trusscore panels are lightweight and don’t require specialty tools, the couple was able to complete the install themselves—even carrying materials up the ladder to the treehouse without a problem.
“As always, it’s handy to not need specialty tools to use the product. Install can be done with only one person, and it’s light. Carrying the panels up the treehouse ladder could’ve been challenging if it were a different product—not with Trusscore.”
The Outcome: A Bright, Modern Treehouse That Wows Friends and Inspires Other Parents
The finished treehouse is equal parts playful and polished: a bright, modern space that looks as good as it functions.
“It’s a wonderful space, turning out better than we had originally expected. Having the white SlatWall on the ceiling easily reflects light into the space allowing us to not need power for lights. Friends have often joked it’ll be an adult hangout space sooner rather than later.”
The project quickly caught attention online and among their community, with friends and family inspired to explore Trusscore for their own projects.
“A few parents have seen the treehouse now and have asked about the product and how we could install it in their playroom in the basement, at the cottage, or in their garages.”
For Kenzie and Sebastian, the treehouse has become more than just a backyard structure—it’s a reminder that with a little creativity, practical materials can still deliver design-worthy results.
“We’re seeing friends and family want to replace their drywall or wood finish to something bright, resilient and new and we’re onboard to show them how easy Trusscore is and honestly how it’ll change their views on the standard finish types often found in homes these days.”
