About Pines & Palms Resort
Located in Islamorada, Pines & Palms Resort is a boutique-style oceanfront property made up of charming beach cottages. Guests gather here for relaxation, fun, and unforgettable moments by the water. The resort prides itself on offering first-class amenities that showcase the beauty of the Florida Keys.
The Goal: Create a Stronger, Longer-Lasting Dock for Resort Guests
The dock at Pines & Palms is one of the resort’s most-used spaces—a gathering spot where guests can take in ocean views, share meals, or enjoy a quiet morning coffee. But over the years, the harsh coastal environment had taken its toll.
“The old dock was so deteriorated. It was really just the old pressure-treated boards that had disintegrated,” explained Joe, a project manager for Native Construction. The resort needed a replacement that could withstand hurricane-force winds, heavy sun exposure, salt air, and daily use from vacationing families.
The Challenge: Rebuilding in a Harsh Coastal Environment
When Native Construction began the project, the condition of the old dock presented unexpected complications.
“The real challenge was that the old dock wasn’t square, so it took some time to measure, square it up, and adjust a few boards to get the aluminum starter strip lined up perfectly,” Joe recalled.
Beyond alignment, Joe knew the new dock had to perform in one of the toughest environments imaginable—resisting rot, mold, warping, and storm damage. This wasn’t a job for traditional pressure-treated lumber or composite decking, which can fade, splinter, or even come apart during hurricanes.
The Outcome: A Durable PVC Dock That Stands Up to the Elements
To give the resort a dock that would endure for decades, Native Construction chose DockDeck by Trusscore, a PVC dock decking system engineered specifically for waterfront environments. Unlike traditional lumber or composites, DockDeck boards are 100% resistant to water and moisture, meaning they’ll never rot, rust, or splinter. The open-cavity profile also makes the boards significantly lighter than composite while keeping them cool under the Florida sun—an important detail for barefoot resort guests enjoying the space.
“DockDeck was readily available, and it’s a great fit for this kind of environment—hurricane season, sun exposure, moisture, salt air,” Joe explained. “Traditional decking is all screwed or nailed down, so when a storm hits, the wind and water can rip the whole thing apart. DockDeck boards can release under pressure, so the structure isn’t damaged as badly, and you can just snap new boards in afterward.”
For Joe, this was his first time installing DockDeck, but the process proved straightforward thanks to Trusscore’s Clip Strip fastening system. By keeping screws hidden and boards uniformly spaced, the system not only created a seamless finish but also simplified installation. “DockDeck’s fastening system is as easy as it could get,” Joe said. “No need to predrill, countersink, or use hidden fasteners. You just put the strapping down and everything snaps into place.”
The Solution: A Dock That Will Last for Decades
With DockDeck by Trusscore, Pines & Palms Resort now has a durable, beautiful dock built to withstand the Florida Keys’ toughest conditions. The new dock is cooler underfoot, resistant to fading and scratching, and backed by a 20-year limited lifetime warranty—ensuring that the investment will hold up for years to come.
The installation showcases Native Construction’s craftsmanship and provides the resort with a space that matches its first-class guest experience. For Joe, it was a successful first DockDeck project. For Pines & Palms, it created a stronger, longer-lasting centerpiece for their oceanfront oasis.
“I’d say DockDeck performs better in storms. Traditional decking is all screwed or nailed down, so when a storm hits, the wind and water can rip the whole thing apart. DockDeck boards can release under pressure, so the structure isn’t damaged as badly, and you can just snap new boards in afterward.”
