A Ceiling That Lets the Logs Do the Talking
The Rundown
When Mazerolle Builders Ltd. set out to build a log home in rural New Brunswick, the focus was on celebrating the space, not fighting with it. The exposed logs, the natural curves, the rustic texture: every design decision needed to support that aesthetic rather than compete with it. That's why when it came time to finish the ceiling, drywall was never really on the table.
What they chose instead was Trusscore Wall&CeilingBoard: a bright panel with a clean finish that draws the eye upward and lets the craftsmanship of the logs take center stage.

The Challenge: Finishing a Log Home Without Covering It
Log construction presents finishing challenges that conventional building doesn't. The logs themselves are the feature: raw, curved, and tactile. The interior finishes need to complement that without creating their own mess or maintenance headaches.
For Mazerolle Builders, the ceiling decision was driven by a simple question: what material could deliver a clean, finished look without overpowering the natural character of the space? Drywall was quickly ruled out. As Natalie Mazerolle explained, the thought of drywall dust settling into every nook and cranny of the log structure, and the prospect of scribing drywall panels against irregular log surfaces, was a non-starter. Metal panels were considered but felt too cold and industrial for the warmth of a log interior.
The installation challenge was real, too. Working against curved, natural wood edges means the margin for a clean transition is tight. Standard finishing materials would have left a messy, uneven edge where panel met log.
The Solution: An Easy-to-Install Product That Works with the Logs
Having worked with Trusscore on other projects, the team knew the product could deliver. Trusscore Wall&CeilingBoard panels were installed on the ceiling, and Trusscore Trims proved to be the key detail that made the whole system work in a log home context. Because the panels click together and the trims are cut to fit on site, the crew could build a clean edge around irregular, curved surfaces without the custom scribing that drywall would have demanded.
As Natalie described it: "Everything with a log home is a bit different. When you are dealing with raw logs, you need to account for the curvatures of natural wood edges. Scribing drywall to the logs would have left a messy edge against the log. The J Trim allowed for a smooth transition and a much simpler installation."
The result was a ceiling installation completed in two days by the Mazerolle crew, a timeline that would have been at least double, and possibly triple, with drywall. Beyond speed, the clean white Trusscore panels accomplished exactly what the team was looking for: a bright, consistent surface that frames the logs rather than fighting them.
“A clean, consistent ceiling finish was critical for us. We wanted to make the ceiling pop by showcasing the logs and to draw attention to the details. This was accentuated by the seamless Trusscore boards.”
Natalie Mazerolle, Manager, Mazerolle Builders Ltd.The Outcome: A Bright Ceiling That’s Built to Last
The finished space is bright, airy, and distinctly suited to what it was always meant to be: A showcase for skilled log craftsmanship. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, and the white Trusscore ceiling reflects that light throughout the space. As Natalie put it, "[Trusscore] allows the entire space to feel lighter and brighter. With such large windows, we get a beautiful reflection of natural light throughout the space."
Long-term, the team is confident the ceiling will hold its appearance. "We know that over time the Trusscore will not fade or wear down. It will keep the space clean and neat looking for years to come." That durability matters in a building that's now both a working office and a family retreat—a space that needs to look good for the long haul without demanding constant maintenance.

For Mazerolle Builders, the project has also opened a conversation about log construction as a specialty market. The photographs of the finished interior are already serving as portfolio pieces, and the company is actively exploring opportunities to bring that same combination of rustic log aesthetics and clean modern finishes to clients who want something genuinely different.
“Trusscore for this project was installed by our crew in two days. If this was a drywall application, it would have been at least double that, if not triple.”
