We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. This is our story. 

It is a story about family first and foremost, of two families coming together. McMunn & Yates was formed in 1971 when Terry Yates and Stan and Gordon McMunn opened their first store in Dauphin, MB. With combined experience in both contract work and retail, this union of families put their faith in each other to build and rebuild something larger than themselves, now hundreds of families serving their local communities large and small. McMunn & Yates is committed to and believe in the hometown values and doing business with their friends and neighbors. We believe the "and" in McMunn & Yates is more than just a conjunction because without it, there are no connections and no commitment. We believe its this commitment to building strong, honest relationships that is the foundation upon which McMunn & Yates rests. 

Today, McMunn & Yates has celebrated over 52 years in business and we are so much more than a lumber store. The McMunn & Yates Family of Divisions provide a spectrum of products from materials to professional design to flooring and furniture. Throughout the company, in each manufacturing plant and retail location, our vision and mission is to be the leading supplier of products and professional service to the building industry across the Prairies and Northwestern Ontario while providing the best customer service in the industry. 

Our History

1971  McMunn & Yates was formed in 1971 when Terry Yates and Stan and Gordon McMunn opened their first store in Dauphin, MB. 

1972  Company joins TIM-BR-MART buying group

1977  First expansion with opening of Grandview building supply outlet

1980  Purchase of Tim-Br-Fab for truss production in Dauphin, MB

1983  Opening of store in Roblin, MB

1986  Expands rural reach with store opening in Russell, MB

1988  Purchase of Charleswood Building Supplies to open store in Winnipeg, MB

1989  Purchase of F. Brent Reid to expand in Brandon, MB

1991  Company opens outlet in Ste. Rose du Lac, MB 

1999  Opens McMunn & Yates Roofing & Drywall Center in Brandon, MB

2001  Purchase of G.K. Smith & Sons to expand in interlake region

2002  Accepts invitation to join Independent Lumber Dealers Cooperative (ILDC buying group)

2002  Expands far north by opening store in Thompson, MB

2002  Jenkins Flooring in Brandon joins the McMunn & Yates family 

2004  Changes name back to McMunn & Yates Building Supplies 

2004  Purchase of Miracle Lumber Mart in Beausejour, MB 

2005  Purchase of G.W.D Sales Ltd. in Portage, MB 

2007  Builds a new store in Portage, MB 

2008  Company builds a 50,000 sq. ft Distribution Center in Headingley, MB 

2010  W.S. Staruiala Building Materials is acquired in Flin Flon, MB 

2010  Purchase of CT Loewen Building Centre and their concrete division in Steinbach, MB 

2011  Enter Saskatchewan retail market with purchase of Weber's Building Centres and Weber Furniture & Appliances in Yorkton & Kamsack, SK 

2013  Purchase of 4 McDiarmid Lumber locations in Winnipeg, 1 in Keewatin, ON and the purchase of the truss division located in Oak Bluff, MB 

2014  Jenkins Flooring in Dauphin joins the McMunn & Yates family 

2018  Expansion continues in Northwestern Ontario with the purchase of North American Lumber in Fort Frances, ON 

2019  Relocate our store in Flin Flon, MB to its current location at 32 North Avenue 

2022  Opened our new store in Ashern, MB

2023  Opened our new store in Steinbach, MB after a devasting fire in 2020

2023  Purchase of 3 Canadian Lumber locations in Winkler, Morden and Altona in Southern Manitoba
